Translation schools put interpretation off until late in their programmes because they only see it as a professional occupation. They don't see its other advantages for beginners and non-professionals as you have done. All bilinguals, even beginners, can do SOME interpreting however imperfect. Also, it's motivating, because it's communicative and useful.translatologyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11562130468577763310noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3267894446738309734.post-62463968961094563632010-12-16T11:07:49.523-08:002010-12-16T11:07:49.523-08:00I teach a very basic course on interpreting as par...I teach a very basic course on interpreting as part of a Bachelor program on intercultural communication (a lot of the material on my blog is aimed at them). When I was first asked to do it I hesitated because the students have only had three terms of language teaching, so they clearly do not have enough language skills to interpret. But what I have found was that: 1) It is a very good course as a kind of general awareness raising on community interpreting and its importance in society and 2) The role plays in interpreting are excellent language exercises, both for the person acting as an interpreter and for the person acting as the foreigner. They have to come up with terminology and they have to use it immediately and often several times.<br />So maybe not only translation, but also interpreting have their place in language teaching.Tolkenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13841561013551460518noreply@blogger.com
