I can see if I can get you a copy. As for the understanding/reexpression thing, I would guess it might all be to do with your relative experience in writing in the particular language.JD-Glasgowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05051404138009965085noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3267894446738309734.post-73141834053104960942009-10-27T08:07:00.533-07:002009-10-27T08:07:00.533-07:00Ah yes, understanding is very important, but it...Ah yes, understanding is very important, but it's not everything. The Expert Translator may still score on the re-expression side.

I think the work at Heriot Watt that you're referring to may be by Verena Jung, who wrote her PhD thesis on self-translation of literary texts. It's been published as "English-German Self-Translation of Academic Texts and its Relevance for Translation Theory and Practice" but I haven't seen it. Certainly sounds interesting.translatologyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11562130468577763310noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3267894446738309734.post-35969584840883869542009-10-27T04:14:38.774-07:002009-10-27T04:14:38.774-07:00Self-translation is indeed a strange beast. There are indeed some theoretical views on it, two of which were produced, I believe, at Heriot-Watt University here in Scotland.

One point worth mentioning is that self-translation might actually be a case where the professional vs. natural translation dichotomy might not work. After all, who knows better than the speaker what they meant to say? Who could possibly be a better translator than they are?JD-Glasgowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05051404138009965085noreply@blogger.com
